I'm a huge fan of the bed and breakfast concept, though I've always been a little intimidated by the intimacy of the experience. (There's something to be said for the anonymity of a large hotel, where nobody knows you or cares about your comings and goings.) Do I really want to mingle with strangers over breakfast? Do I really want to make small talk about the lovely Door County weather and the newest shop on Main Street? Do I want to know who's visiting from where and how many times they've come back to the Thorp Inn? Well, now I know the answer is 'yes'. Melanie, the new owner of the Inn, is gracious and considerate. As the only guest (this is an extraordinary rarity here) in the house one night this week, I was treated to her company over breakfast and several chance encounters throughout my three day stay. She made certain I wasn't left alone at mealtime and that I was introduced to the amenities and indulgences available. I'm a vintage-home restoration geek and I was impressed. Everything possible is done up in the appropriate period style. Where modern conveniences are required, every effort has been made to compromise gently. You will NOT be disappointed by the period-style kitchen! I could live in it, if someone would be kind enough to drag a cot in there. The new, expansive porch is a comfy haven, where you will be sheltered from sun or rain, yet able to settle in with cocoa, read a book, or just people-watch on the quiet street one block off Main Street. A huge library is available to guests and the variety of antique and current books is impressive. Lest I forget, the rooms are lovely, lovely, lovely. They range in size from 'compact' (though not at all uncomfortably so), to vast. There are charming cabins on the property, with knotty pine cabinets and enough space to feel comfortable, with well-equipped little kitchens and very generous outdoor decks. I met a family who have stayed in the same cabin every year for 25 years! And the long, brick driveway and impeccably maintained lawn and gardens - just the best! You'll even have a bit of a water view from the second floor rooms. I watched one famous Door County sunset from mine and took a beautiful series of photos of it. Go! You won't be disappointed. And you may meet me over breakfast, because I wouldn't miss the fresh muffins and quiche, or the good conversation!

Stayed in the main house, with breakfast (muffins, fruit, and quiche of the day, fine coffee). Fine old house, well restored, stayed in Maria room, with access to front porch and front library for our evening wine-down, and snacks in the center room cupboard. Small room, Good queen size four poster, Convenient to Fish Creek downtown but far enough from main thoroughfare so as to be quiet, easy walk to Coopers Corner restaurant (well worth a visit).

What a truly lovely bed and breakfast. I would highly recommend this charming inn. My husband and I decided to take a somewhat last minute long weekend trip to Door County for our fifth anniversary. My husband did some research and chose the Thorp House Inn for our stay. I was so glad he did. The house is very beautiful. I loved that its historical touches (like crown molding) were preserved. It was a bit like stepping back in time with the decor (in a good way)! There are multiple rooms downstairs for guests to use, like the living room and the library, as well as a gorgeous front porch. There are complementary coffee, water, tea, and soft drinks available in a common area kitchenette 24 hours a day, which was greatly appreciated. I enjoyed a nightly tea. The breakfast is delicious as well. It's available any time from 8:30-10 in the mornings. There was always an individual fruit plate set out when we walked in. Shortly after we sat down, Melanie, the owner of the inn, would come in and serve us our egg stratas. She changes the type of strata daily (we had french onion, kale, and veggie while we were there), but there is a strata every morning. There was also OJ and muffins to enjoy, and of course, there is an endless flow of coffee. We had the pleasure of speaking with Melanie two of the mornings and she had great suggestions on places to visit during our stay. She even asked if there was anything we needed each morning. It was much appreciated. We stayed in the Eliza room, which was on the first floor of the inn, just through the library. I don't think my husband was aware that we were staying on the first floor when he booked the room, or I think he would have picked a second floor room instead. Don't get me wrong - there was nothing wrong with the room. It was quite charming with time period wallpaper and end tables. However, at street level, I felt uncomfortable with the window shades open at night. I felt like we were in a fishbowl. Plus, when a couple was sitting out on the porch, we could hear everything they were saying, even with the windows closed. Again, the guests were very respectful, and it wasn't late at night, but I wanted to mention it. The bathroom was cute, but the shower was a bit tiny. My husband is quite tall (6'5"), and he told me the shower head was rather low for him, and he had to bend to get completely under the water stream. I had no problems, but I'm pretty short. Finally, the inn is about a block away from the main street in Fish Creek. We enjoyed walking the couple blocks of the downtown area and visiting the local shops. Also, we were able to walk to a small local beach and to Wild Tomato for dinner, which was nice. I would absolutely stay here again in a heartbeat.

We love the Thorpe House. It is charming in every way. Beautiful and charming furnishings, interesting history, tasty breakfast, convenient location and a romantic atmosphere. We will definitely be back in the future.

We had a great stay! Our downstairs room in the main house was wonderful. It was quiet and the morning coffee started when the first early bird touched the button. (me). The breakfast was excellent. The new owner is doing a great job. Highly recommend it!!"

This pretty, charming little inn was a HUGE disapointment. First, we were traveling with our 1 year old, and the owners have a policy that small children can't stay in the main house. I get that, no problem. Although our daughter wasn't a crier, other kids may be and the other guests shouldn't suffer because of it. Check. However, staying in the "cottages" meant we weren't invited to the social events in the main house, such as wine and cheese tastings, breakfast, or socializing with the other guests. Not only weren't we invited, but when I showed up to the early evening event (as I would have done at any other B&B) I was humiliated by the owner and asked to leave. Wow. Didn't expect that. OK, moving on. Cottage was very cute, but not at all what had been described over the phone when I made the reservations, and the "crib" provided was a safety hazard and very dirty besides. Hmmm. This place isn't cheap, I wasn't thrilled. OK, moving on. Since we were traveling with a small child, we brought munchie food, and since we had a kitchenette we had brought food for in the refrigerator. Upon check out we forgot the food from the refrigerator (stored in brand new tupperware containers), but since we were still in the area, stopped back by a little while later to pick them up. Not only was the owner/manager (one in the same) rude, and incredulous that I would actually want my container back, but he had GIVEN IT AWAY to the maid who had cleaned the room. Now, I've spoken about this to others in the hospitality industry, and although I don't know if they have a legal obligation to hold our property for us, they most certainly have an ETHICAL obligation to do so - especially since it was less than two hours post-checkout. Most hotels and inns have told me they set aside ANYTHING that is left for up to six weeks - even food and beverages. OK, moving on. So, I left my name and address, and asked that they get it back and mail it to me. I live in Madison, WI and should have had it within a few days. Nope. Three weeks later I called and spoke to the OTHER owner/manager (a woman, not the man I'd dealt with on-site). Not only was she rude, but belittling, and insulting. She actually called me names!! I have never been so humiliated in my traveling life - not even close. I travel a lot for work, and stay in many hotels, motels and inns, trashy to five star. NEVER have I had an experience as bad as this. STAY AWAY from this place - there are TONS of other, friendly B&B, Inn and other options in the Fish Creek area much more deserving of your patronage. Fish Creek is an incredible community and I've been back since this experience, but will never again go to the Thorpe House Inn again.

If you are a fan of historic, yet updated Victorian bed and breakfasts - this is your place. Right in the heart of Fish Creek, we were able to walk to the state park, local shops and restaurants. Sverre and Chris are great! Chris gave us some great restaurant recommendations - both places she told us about were amazing. Sverre greeted us each morning for breakfast with homemade scones [YUM], fruit, muffins, homemade jams, hard boiled eggs, homemade granola, yogurt, coffee and OJ! We had never been to a B&B before, but really enjoyed meeting new people - one couple was from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Sverre also gave us directions for some beautiful scenic drives. We stayed in the Jessie room - with the crisp weather the gas fireplace was really nice! We were able to see some of the other rooms and cottages and might stay in another room next time.
